Wow! Busby Berkely... what a weirdo! Emily & I watched both http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dames and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42nd_Street_(film) only a month or two ago. Unfortunately, the Dames disk was messed up, but the pixelated psychedelia that resulted almost added to the experience!
I was familiar with a couple of the songs - like The Flamingos' amazing version of "I Only Have Eyes for You" - but only as they've appeared outside of the Busbysphere. Sounds like he was quite a character, as well as being an iconic musical-maker.
